This spring, we’ve added a new adventure to our list of Mini Muse memories — Ace’s very first garden. And not just any garden — a balcony garden, high above the street, where sunshine, soil, and smiles came together in the most beautiful way.

A Young black boy leans over a raised wooden planter on a balcony, concentrating on carefully pouring soil from a galvanized metal can. Gardening gloves and tools are visible nearby. The sun casts shadows across the patio, on which we see a small metal & glass table and patio chair in the background. A strand of small globe lights is strung around a balcony post and draped in swags across the baclony panels.
Pouring with purpose — even filling the soil feels like magic when it’s your very first garden.

Watching Ace step into his new role as a little farmer was pure joy. From scooping soil with careful hands to gently placing seedlings into their new homes, every moment was filled with purpose and pride. Even taking the plastic off the planter pieces felt important to him — because when it’s your garden, every step matters.

  • A young black boy stands on a sunny balcony, holding a small metal can filled with soil. He’s dressed in denim overalls, a grey t-shirt, and black Puma sandals, preparing a raised wooden planter box lined with blue tarp. Child-sized gardening gloves and a trowel rest nearby.
  • A yound black boy gently uses a small garden trowel to dig in fresh soil while holding a plant in his other hand. He’s standing on a balcony next to a wooden planter, dressed in denim overalls and a grey t-shirt. A barbecue and potted herbs sit in the background.
  • A young black boy concentrates on planting a seedling in a wooden balcony garden box. One hand grips a trowel while the other cradles a leafy young plant. Sunlight illuminates the scene.

Dressed in his denim overalls and sandals, Ace got to work like a pro. Mom, Dad, and Ace talked about roots and sunlight, about watering and patience. And, of course, they got our hands dirty — the very best kind of learning.

“Helping things grow” might just be the most magical feeling in the world — and seeing it through Ace’s eyes reminded me how powerful those first moments of care and curiosity can be.

His excitement only grew as the garden box filled up. Tiny labels marked the spots for basil, peas, beans, thyme, and more. And when he finally stepped back to look at what he’d made — that grin said it all.

A barefoot young black boy beams with a wide, proud smile beside a fully planted balcony garden box. Various herbs and vegetables are now thriving in the soil, each labeled with a tag.
All planted! That smile says it all — Ace’s first garden is officially growing 🌿

This is more than a planting project. It’s a memory, a lesson, a start. A reminder that growth doesn’t always need acres — sometimes, all it takes is a small space, a handful of dirt, and a whole lot of love.
