Some milestones are tiny but monumental — like choosing the yarn for your very first pair of hand-knit socks.

Over FaceTime, I showed Ace a handful of yarns I had ready to go. Teals, brights, deep stormy variegateds… a whole cool-toned collection to tempt a young knitter’s eye. Two choices at a time, without hesitation, he picked out his favourite every time: Sun Bleached Indigo from Essence of Autumn Yarn. A brilliant swirl of blues and whites, moody and oceanic. His decisiveness? Impeccable taste, if I do say so myself. — Sun Bleached Indigo — is dyed by Sheryl, the talented indie Canadian dyer behind Essence of Autumn Yarn. Funny enough, I knew Sheryl when she was a teenager. We lost touch after moving away from Milton, but years later, I ran into her at the KW Knitters’ Fair and was immediately taken by her eye for colour and the beauty of her designs. I’ve been a fan ever since.

I’ve never been one for knitting baby bootees — they’re adorable, sure, but they don’t last. Socks, though? Socks have staying power. With a little growing room, these should serve him through more than a couple of months of adventures, play dates, and dancing.
This feels like the start of something special — the first stitches in a long line of memories made one row at a time.
I’ll keep you posted as the socks take shape. For now, I’m just soaking in the joy of casting on with yarn chosen by my favourite little human.
