It started with plastic.
At work, we use long plastic ties to bundle mic units, and for weeks now, I’ve been quietly collecting them — one by one, knotting them end-to-end, turning them into a bright, sturdy ball of plarn. Waste not, want not, right? And with enough saved up, I’ve finally started crocheting the Japanese Knot Plarn Tote by RecycleCindy.
I was mid-stitch, just about finished the bottom shaping, when my phone lit up: What’sApp from Ace. 🥰
He wanted to show me his new hat — a stainless steel mixing bowl he’d proudly perched atop his head like a chef’s crown. His joy was irresistible, and I couldn’t help but match his energy. So I picked up my own stainless steel bowl — the one I was using as a plarn holder — and popped it on my head too.

Me: “Twinsies!” 🥹😂
The look on his face? Pure magic. 😂💛
He blinked. He squinted. And then the laughter exploded from both of us — his delighted squeals filling my ears and heart, his Momma in the background equally bewildered and amused.
Of course, I had to explain why I had a mixing bowl at arm’s reach. “It’s my yarn bowl,” I told him between giggles, “I’m crocheting with plastic!”

It might not be traditional yarn, but this tote is already full of good energy. Tied together with reclaimed materials, silly moments, and the kind of joy only a little boy and his Amma can share — it’s shaping up to be more than just a bag.
It’s a memory, stitched in yellow & stainless steel.
