It’s been a minute since I’ve posted — this semester has been absolutely full-on from the word Go — and I’m still working part-time, and I’ve taken on a couple industry-relevant volunteer opportunities, but today was too sweet not to share.

Ace came back from church and grocery shopping with the biggest grin and declared it “the best day ever” because  “I have God and chicken.” a heart-warming LOL moment for sure and hard to argue with his logic. Costco chicken is one of my favourites too. I told Ace that when I buy my chicken at Costco, I can’t wait until I get home; I’ve got my hands in the bag pulling those juicy bits off of the legs before I’m even out of the parking lot!!

He loves Sunday School, and not just because of the crafts and stories. The kids earn attendance money — printed to look just like real Canadian cash — and they can spend it on treats from a prize box. But Ace has bigger plans. He’s saving every dollar. “If I spend it, then I will have no money.” Again, his reasoning is sound.

Age 4, future planning on track.

A young black boy is sitting at the end of a flat cart, a Walmart bag of groceries behind him, and he his holding a Kirkland rotiserie chicken in its bag. His hair is a natural afro, he is wearing an army green coat with black pants and boots.

So here he is, proudly riding home with groceries, clutching the holy grail of Sunday lunches, and feeling like his life is pretty perfect.

And he’s not wrong. Sometimes the best days really are just having faith, family, and a good roast chicken.
