A new Academic semester, a new class that is proving to be a fave! This week in Photographic Communication, our focus was on compositional basics. We worked with techniques like leading lines, the rule of thirds, filling the frame, using objects to frame a subject, choosing clean and simple backgrounds, and emphasizing strong lines and shapes.

While the focus was not on editing, some of the images that I did not submit for the assignements I edited to bring out a mood that I felt in photos. Learning to use (and not loathe) Photoshop is coming in handy!!

Here are a few of my faves from my camera roll this week:

  • A cluster of red maple leaves on a branch, glowing against a background of green foliage, signaling the start of autumn.
  • The Spirit Catcher sculpture in Barrie, Ontario. One wing of the sculpture is captured, darkly silhouetted on the left thrid of the image against a dramatic sky filled with billowing clouds, evoking the sense that a storm has been summoned.
  • Reflection of the Spirit Catcher sculpture in Barrie, Ontario, captured on a smooth reflective surface, appearing as though it is floating in the clouds. THe image is distorted, short and long, in the top third of the image.
  • Railroad tracks on Sunnidale Road extending into the distance with a signal light glowing red, flanked on both sides by trees in early autumn foliage. The main set of tracks are centered in the image, from the bottom of the picture disappearing into the centre of the image. A segment of a simple bridge that spans the tracks is in the middle of the image, over the vanishing point of the main tracks. A side track comes into the right of the image, curving gently and joining the main track just before the main track vanish.

First Autumn Leaves
The bright red leaves draw the eye immediately, standing out against the softer greens, though the eye is drawn to the green leaf in focus in the top left corner. It’s a simple subject, but the contrast and placement keep the composition balanced.

Spirit Catcher Summoning a Storm
The Spirit Catcher sculpture is a landmark in Barrie, Ontario. The deeply silhouetted sculture pictured extending into a dramatic sky, its peak at the centre of the billowing clouds as though it has summoned this storm.

Spirit Catcher Roof Reflection
Finding reflections is wonderful way to change perspective. Here, the Spirit Catcher appears shorter, like a bird diving into the clouds.

Sunnidale Railroad Tracks
The tracks are a classic example of leading lines, pulling the eye forward into the horizon. The trees and signals frame the tracks. It is pretty much centered, but I still really like this image. Sometimes rules are meant to be broken.
